Workshop on McDowell – Mind, Value and Reality

RIFAJOn the weekend of July 19-20, 2015, we were holding a small workshop on John McDowell’s Mind, Value and Reality at the University of Bamberg. We were mainly concentrating on McDowell’s criticism of the internal/external reasons debate initiated by Bernard Williams and McDowell’s secondary qualities reply to Mackie. Of course, we also talked about McDowell’s rather extravagant approach to philosophy in general, his intellectual connection both to German idealism and the later Wittgenstein and also his growing influence in contemporary debates both in American and European philosophy.

Sebastian, Simon, Thimo and Vanessa want to thank all participants for a wonderful workshop in Bamberg with inspiring discussions in the charming city where Hegel once completed his Phenomenology of Spirit in 1807.

Additionally, the four of us plotted further philosophical events the Forum Theoretical Philosophy may organise in the future, including some vague ideas about organising another international Summer School in August 2016 and some more concrete plans of smaller philosophical workshops either in Lindau at Lake Constance or at the University of Bamberg. We will update our website as soon as our plans become more concrete. Please stay tuned and enjoy a wonderful philosophical summer 2015.
